- Sony has revealed when it will begin rolling out Android Pie to the phones set to receive the update.
- Three of its phones will get the update slightly earlier than expected, while the rest will get it on Sony’s original schedule.
- Sony has already begun rolling out Pie for the Xperia XZ2, and XZ2 Compact.
Sony has revealed its schedule for the Android Pie update rollout and some of its devices will receive the new software ahead of its original schedule.
Sep 13, 2018 - Sony Xperia XZ Premium under performs with Android 9.0 Pie, spotted. Smartphones already begin receiving their latest Android OS update,. Jun 11, 2019 October 18, 2018 — Sony has revealed detailed info regarding its Android Pie update schedule. The company said the XZ Premium, XZ1, and XZ1 Compact will get the update sooner than expected — the rollout will begin on October 26 as opposed to in November. The other handsets will get the update as per original schedule.
Back in August, Sony announced that six Xperia XZ devices would get the Android Pie update in November, while three Xperia XA devices would get it in early 2019. However, just last week, the Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact began to receive their update early.
Sony says the XZ Premium, XZ1, and XZ1 Compact will also get the update sooner than expected. The rollout for these phones will begin on October 26.
The other Sony phones receiving Pie will do so as per the original schedule. Sony will begin to rollout the update for the XZ2 Premium from November 7, while the Xperia XA2, XA2 Ultra, and XA2 Plus will get the update from March 4 next year. While this is much later than the other phones, March just about qualifies as early 2019 (and at least Sony has provided a date, which is more than many Android OEMs have managed).
Sony Xperia XZ3 hands-on: Keeping up with the times
If you can’t keep up with Sony’s releases, you’re not alone. The Japanese manufacturer is known for the rapid cadence at which it launches new smartphone iterations, and we’ve come to expect a (slightly) revamped …
Of course, owners of the above phone’s won’t necessarily get the update on the day stated. As Sony points out in its blog post, software rollouts are a phased process and when you actually receive the update will depend on a number of factors including where you are located and your carrier.
Still, if you own one of the Sony phones set to receive the update, it must be nice to have a ballpark date for when you will receive the latest version of Android, right?

Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact (47.2.A.0.306) is also incompatible, cannot install from Play Store. |

New build firmware today. I wonder if we will lose access to arcore with every system update. I often use it. Unfortunately, I can not do it now. Frustrating |

@Indashio Sorry about not responding when I initially tagged this. What is your build fingerprint? You can get this by running adb shell getprop ro.build.fingerprint .We're working on some improvements that should make ARCore much less sensitive to changes in device behavior especially changes in timestamping, so this should hopefully improve in the future. |

@avonwyss Could you report a separate issue for that? This is for a device that we're allowing to download ARCore but then it's not working correctly. |
commented Dec 3, 2018
@inio I added a similar issue here for the XZ1 Compact: #660 I too have had no luck getting ARCore detecting surfaces since updating to Android 9. Lots of points being picked up, but no surfaces generating. It worked perfectly fine on Android 8 prior to the update. |

We're seeing the same issue on Sony XZ Premium - since PIE update ARCore is unusable as it cannot find any surface (surfaces it previously found no problem) Also experiencing the same issue on Samsung Tab S3 - but this has Android 8.0.0 samsung/gts3lltexx/gts3llte:8.0.0/R16NW/T825XXU2BRG3:user/release-keys |

@inio: ARCore 1.6 has resolved all my tracking issues on the Xperia XZ1 Compact with Android 9. Thanks for the update! |
commented Dec 10, 2018
@inio unfortunately ARCore 1.6 has not fixed our Sony issue. We've tested 1.6 and still have the same issue. (Sorry can't get build fingerprint as device on holiday with dev - without PC access. Can get in 1 week) |

The 1.6 update did not help for me either. FIngerprint Sony/G8441/G8441:9/47.2.A.0.306/1344763102:user/release-keys |

In the meantime I got another Pie update for the XZ1C and ARCore 1.6 now seems to work. |

ZX Premium now working! We also received an OS update from Sony and it's all back to normal for us on Sony ZX Premium (Samsung Tab still not working though!) |

Closing as this issue should be fixed after installing the latest available Android firmware updates for Sony Xperia XZ Premium, as well as updating to ARCore SDK 1.6.0 (which will ensure that the device is running ARCore 1.6.0 or later). |
